Private Plate Auctions
Register to bid

Trust & Safety

Last updated: 7 October 2026

Buying or selling a private registration should feel as safe as it is exciting. PPA Auction is an auction platform only: we don't own, buy or sell the plates listed here, and we don't set their prices. What we do is make sure every auction happens between verified people, on a listing we've checked, with the money protected until the DVLA transfer is complete.

This page explains the safeguards we build in, what we expect from you, and what to do if something doesn't look right.

How we protect every auction

Every user is verified

Before you can bid or list a plate, we verify your identity through our partner [Identity verification provider]. We check that you are over 18, that your name and address are genuine, and that your payment card is valid and in your name. Accounts that fail verification cannot take part in auctions.

Every listing is checked before it goes live

When a seller submits a registration, our team reviews it before it's accepted. We ask for evidence that the seller is entitled to sell it — a valid V778 Retention Certificate, a V750 Certificate of Entitlement, or the V5C logbook for the vehicle the plate is currently on — and we check the details against DVLA records where we can. Plates with expired certificates, mismatched names or anything that suggests the seller isn't entitled to sell are rejected.

These checks reduce risk, but they are not a guarantee. The seller remains legally responsible for the accuracy of their listing.

Your money is held in escrow

Winning bidders never pay the seller directly. The hammer price is paid into a secure escrow account operated by [Escrow / payment provider], a regulated third party. The seller is only paid once the DVLA has confirmed the registration has been transferred to the buyer (or to a certificate in the buyer's name). If the transfer can't be completed for reasons that aren't the buyer's fault, the escrowed funds are returned.

This means buyers aren't asked to trust a stranger with a bank transfer, and sellers know the money is there before they release their paperwork.

Bidding is fair and transparent

  • Sellers, and anyone connected to them, cannot bid on their own plates. Shill bidding leads to immediate account closure.
  • Late bids automatically extend the auction by [2] minutes, so no one can win by sniping in the final second.
  • Reserve prices are confidential, but the listing always shows whether the reserve has been met.
  • Every bid is time-stamped and logged. If there's ever a dispute about the result, we have a full record.

Secure payments and data

Card details are handled by [Escrow / payment provider] and are never stored on our servers. Our site is served over HTTPS, and your personal data is handled in line with UK GDPR — see our Privacy Policy.

Staying safe as a buyer

  • Always pay through PPA Auction. We will never ask you to pay a seller by bank transfer, cash, cryptocurrency or gift card. Anyone who does is not acting for us.
  • Keep conversations on the platform. If a seller contacts you privately offering the plate for less "outside the auction", it's a red flag — and you would lose the protection of escrow.
  • Read the listing carefully. Check whether the plate is on a certificate or on a vehicle, and whether it can be supplied on a certificate at all.
  • Know the age rule. A registration can't make a vehicle look newer than it is. Check the plate is suitable for the vehicle you intend to put it on before you bid.
  • Don't display it early. It is illegal to put a private plate on your car until the DVLA has completed the transfer and you've received the updated documents.
  • Bid only what you're prepared to pay. A winning bid is a binding commitment to buy.

Staying safe as a seller

  • Never hand over documents before the funds are in escrow. We'll tell you when the buyer's payment has cleared and when to proceed.
  • Watch your certificate's expiry date. If a V778 or V750 expires, the right to the registration can be lost permanently. Keep it renewed while your plate is listed.
  • Keep your account details private. We'll never ask for your password, full card number or security codes by email, phone or message.
  • Be accurate. Describe the plate exactly as it is. Misleading listings are removed and can make you liable for the buyer's losses.

Recognising scams

Most plate transactions go smoothly, but fraud does happen in this market. Be cautious if:

  • someone contacts you claiming to be from PPA Auction from an email address that doesn't end in @[domain];
  • you're asked to pay a "release fee", "DVLA fee" or "escrow fee" to an account that isn't shown in your PPA dashboard;
  • a plate is offered well below what similar plates sell for, especially with pressure to act quickly;
  • someone asks you to move the conversation to WhatsApp, text or personal email;
  • you receive a link to log in that doesn't take you to [domain].

If in doubt, stop, log in to your account directly (not through the link) and contact us.

About the DVLA

All UK registration transfers are administered by the Driver and Vehicle Licensing Agency (DVLA). PPA Auction is not part of, or affiliated with, the DVLA. The DVLA can refuse or withdraw any registration, and transfer times depend on them. We'll keep you updated at every stage, but we can't speed up the DVLA's own processes.

Reporting a problem

If you think a listing is fraudulent, a user is behaving suspiciously, or you've received a message pretending to be from us, tell us straight away at info@private-plate-auctions.com or use the Report button on the listing. We investigate every report and can suspend accounts and pause auctions while we do.

If you believe you've been the victim of fraud, also report it to Action Fraud, the UK's national reporting centre for fraud and cybercrime, on 0300 123 2040 or at actionfraud.police.uk.

PPA Auction is operated by Private Plate Auctions Limited, registered in England and Wales, company no. 17281207.
